Jefferson County, NY
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (01 November, 1997)
Author: Elise D. Chan
Average review score:

Great Photographs of Northern New York!
Jefferson County, NY is a wonderful photographic journey through the cities and towns of northern New York state. The photographs appear to be, for the most part, vintage postcards with views of the different areas with captions underneath. (Besides the forward and the captions, there are no "stories" in this book). Some of these places include Watertown, Chaumont, Black River, Sackets Harbor, Pine Camp, as well as many others. The book is probably of most interest to people from the area. It is interesting to see the different buildings that are now gone because of 'urban renewal'. If you are from northern New York, or maybe even if you enjoy architecture or regional history, you will enjoy this book!

Just Around the Corner, in New Jersey
Published in Paperback by Middle Atlantic Press (November, 1987)
Author: Edward, Brown
Average review score:

This is a must own for all Jerseyites.
This book caters towards kids and people who do not like to read, but everyone will appreciate it. It is a must own to anyone from New Jersey, as it documents many of the ghost stories, folk tales and legends endemic to the area. Being the author's son, I offer the "Killer Shark on the Loose" and/or "The Red Scarf" stories for my friends to read. Then they refuse to give me the book back until they've read the whole thing! If you're living in Jersey, an ex-Jersey local, or just in the mood for a good book, pick this one up.

Knightsville & Silver Lake, RI
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (01 June, 1998)
Authors: Joe Fuoco and A. J. Lothrop
Average review score:

Great information, and awesome pictures!
I had a report to do on Knightsville, and I visited all of the local libraries, but I couldn't find anything good. Anything I could find, didn't help me to peice together the history. Anyway, I went to Borders and found this! It saved my life!

Lake Boon, MA
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (07 October, 1998)
Authors: Lewis Halprin and Alan Kattelle
Average review score:

Lake Boon is "Any Lake USA". A wondeful trip back in time.
Mr. Kattelle and Mr. Halprin take you back in time to where America remembers it's neighborhood resorts. Like the Catskills and Adirondacks of old, Images of America Lake Boon recalls a simpler time of leisure. Where being together in a magical place in a magical summer time is all we ever longed for. The images are wonderful. From the boat parades of 50 years ago, to ice fishermen and the oddest fun events that entertained folks of all ages. If your a "old times" buff, this book is for you. Lake Boon MA is a jewel just 30 miles from Boston.

One of the most complete I ever heard
This book is a must for whoever loves history or writes about it,
It starts by giving details about the time of "gangaceiros" (portuguse-native word for outlaws), rebelled themselves against, what was then, the new republic of Brazil(although in the beginning the main reason was to defeat the "coroneis").The book gives also a broader insight on how movement started, who were the "gangaceiros" (outlaws),especially "lampiao" who joined the "gangaco when he was 27, in 1917,when Brazil joined the world-war I, later became the lider of the growing group. It goes into the social-economical enviroment, showing still visible and in good-quality photos and real sites where most of the confrontation happened; but the most important aspect is the fact that it shows that, by the the time the country was deeply devided, the ones who supported the new goverment, and the ones who,put up arms and decided to fight, due the injustices praticed by the so called "coroneis" or colonels, who at time were able to buy military tiltes from the cash-craving brazilian army.Once entitled with the power, many engaged in atrocities against the label class people. Also pictures of the "nogueira" family whose majority lived in the small village of "nazare" which was one of the first to take stand on issue, actually getting themselves deeply involved, been the main ones, Odilon Nogueira "flor", Jose Rufino,Bezerra da Silva, who served as commander during later part of the 18 years that "gangaco" virtually controlled the 7 northern states of Brazil. The text is well writting and precise when it comes dates and locations. Finally I do believe this is most complete reference on the matter, if you really are into the first part of the 20th century civil revolutions. The might be hard to find due the fact that is out of print, but it definitely pays to effort.

Lancaster County: The Best Fun, Food, Lodging, Shopping and Sights
Published in Paperback by Koen Books (October, 1997)
Author: Alonna F. Smith
Average review score:

Thorough and accurate
I was raised in Lancaster County, but I have not lived there regularly in over thirty years, but I do enjoy visiting family and old friends. I bought this book to keep current with a wider set of recommendations. I am very impressed with the large number of listings, the accuracy of those I know, and the number of hard to find establishments included, and, especially, the list of purveyors of homegrown, healthy foods in small towns and the countryside I want to try. This is the best book of its kind I have seen.

Land of the Commonwealth: A Portrait of the Conserved Landscapes of Massachusetts
Published in Hardcover by Univ. of Massachusetts Press (01 October, 2000)
Authors: Richard Cheek, John Updike, and Robert E. Cook
Average review score:

Breathtaking!
Each turn of the page reveals another exceptional view. It's easy to take gorgeous landscape photos of New England in Autumn, but Richard Creek goes far beyond that. The lighting, cloud conditions, reflections, and seasonal conditions bring out the most in each photograph. I want to frame each one and hang it on my walls, or better still, visit each place and hope to see and capture a similar moment. I hope Mr. Creek follows up with a series of other states.

League of the Iroquois
Published in Paperback by Citadel Pr (May, 1984)
Authors: Lewis Henry Morgan and William N. Fenton
Average review score:

Foundation for Study of the Iroquois League
I read this book for my Classic Ethnographies seminar at school. It is by far one of the most interesting ethnographies I have had the pleasure of reading. It combines ethnography with history and gives the reader a good overall view of the Iroquois. I can't recommend this book enough. If you only read one book on the Iroquois, this should be that book!

PRAISE FOR LEGENDARY CONNECTICUT
"The book...is full of tales of extraordinary people, events and places that make up Connecticut's surprisingly rich tradition."
--The New York Times

"Nutmeggers are fortunate to have nuggets of Connecticut's rich New England lore preserved and artfully served up by a master storyteller, David Philips." --The Hartford Courant

"LEGENDARY CONNECTICUT is lovely, and it is loving. Philips has a way with words, and he likes to tell a story. It's evident, and his appreciation for history is strong. Any Connecticut resident, ardent New Englander, sometime-weekender, history buff, or folklore buff will appreciate Philips effort." --The Lakeville Journal
